Street Spring Clean 2019

Sunday, 12 May 2019 09:00 until Monday, 13 May 2019 16:00

Our award-winning Street Clean is now in its seventh year and we are delighted that the City and County Council are able to support it again this year. Thanks to your efforts each year to move your cars off Britannia Square and Albany Terrace on the Sunday and Monday, the Council teams have been able to deep clean the streets and gutters and clear out all our drains. This has led to water logging being significantly improved in recent years. Information and free Parking Permits for Pitchcroft Car Park will be distributed before the event.

On Sunday 12th May please join us from 3 pm at the United Reformed Church for sweeping and weeding.  Equipment will be provided and children are especially welcome.

Report

Many thanks to everyone for moving their cars and making such a great job of the Street Clean last Sunday and Monday.

People were very helpful, removing their cars to the car parks for the period and residents turned out once again in great numbers. We were lucky to have such good weather. Many people swept, weeded and litter picked on Sunday, adding to efforts of those who worked hard in the days beforehand. Residents worked hard to pull rubbish and weeds out from the Springfield hedges which the Council picked up next day.

By 5pm on Sunday we had achieved all our objectives and had amassed a small mountain of full black bin bags. Happily, there was still time to get together for tea, cakes and chat at the United Reformed Church Hall in Albany Terrace. A huge thank you to Nicky Neville for arranging everything there for us.

We appreciated all that Lisa Smith at the City Council did to support us. She thought everything through so carefully, from the complex tasks of arranging the Council teams on the Monday and the free parking for residents to providing more posters to put on lampposts. She also came along to join us on Sunday to put out traffic cones and supply us with high viz vests, tools, gloves and rubbish bags. Lisa also arranged for the removal of all the rubbish.

The Council teams did an amazing job on Monday. In addition to the big clean up in Britannia Square and Albany Terrace, they cleaned Back Lane North and the Moors. It was great to have so many machines and skilled people tackling a huge variety of tasks in the area.

There have been many comments from people who say how delighted they are with the effects of the street cleaning and how good the neighbourhood looks. It was also mentioned how lucky we are to have such a scheme in place, with active support from residents and the City Council.

Thanks again for making our Street Clean such a successful and enjoyable event and helping to care for our neighbourhood.

Let’s hope we can get together again next year.
